MacOS Server: A little history. The modern version of Server actually pre-dates Mac OS X itself—Mac OS X Server 1.0 came out back in 1999, two years before OS X’s consumer release. If you’re an iMac or a MacBook Pro user, you probably heard the news about the changes in the macOS server. Before, Mac’s operating system used to be the hub for different network services – from sharing files and hosting a website to running a virtual private network and other related services. The other services I run are Mail and Web. Purposely bought a macmini server back in the day just to run server services. MacOS Server won't be a Server no longer and will need to be renamed to macOS Manager or something like that. Sad day for macOS Server users. Was nice using an easy GUI interface to setup my services.

When Software Update says that your Mac is up to date, the installed version of macOS and all of its apps are also up to date. Why is my mac not updating software update. Starting with macOS Server 5.7.1, Apple no longer bundles open source services such as Calendar Server, Contacts Server, the Mail Server, DNS, DHCP, VPN Server, and Websites with macOS Server. Customers can get these same services directly from open-source providers. This way, macOS Server customers can install the most secure and up-to-date services as soon as they’re available.
